Jewellery and Art by Fiona Mackie

Fiona Mackie, born in Glasgow, is a versatile artist now based in Culloden in the Scottish Highlands. Following a career in Administration for the NHS she co-owned a small sewing shop for 6 years; selling fabrics, sewing patterns and running craft workshops. After a difficult period following the end of the business venture, she is now studying Contemporary Art Practice at UHI Inverness. Fiona takes a multidisciplinary approach to her work utilising fine art skills, machine sewing and hand embroidery, metalwork and textiles.

Her work is inspired by nature, especially beaches, the sea and found materials such as sea glass which can be seen in some of her jewellery pieces. Beach scenes are abundant in her abstract acrylic paintings where she uses a mixture of blue, turquoise, green and white to creative evocative seascapes. Recently Fiona has been influenced by the ancient people of Scotland resulting in the creation of a replica archaeological jewellery hoard for coursework.

For Fiona there are no limitations as far as mediums are concerned and her willigness to experiment feeds her creativity.

Artist Statement

Inspired by nature, beaches and history I am a multidisciplinary artist that likes to mix fine art practice with more traditional craft processes. My passion lies with arts and crafts but it has taken a long time for me to get here.

I studied Art & Design at Standard Grade and Higher level at school but it wasn't a subject that was marketed to me as something I could do as a career. 10 years on wedding budget restrictions meant considering some DIY options and I started to explore my creative side again. I made my own crystal wedding jewellery and then started to make for friends and occasionally sold at markets.

Another 10 years passed and brought a move from Edinburgh to the Highlands. I attended silversmithing classes with a local jeweller and I learned to sew, making my own clothes. I realised what I could achieve with my hands and there was no going back. For 6 years I co-owned a shop selling fabric, haberdashery and running sewing classes. With the pandemic hitting 2 years into business I completed an online Diploma in Silver Jewellery furthering my making skills. During this time I also started painting and drawing again and experimenting with other crafts including shoemaking, leatherwork, embroidery and crochet. It is fair to say that I will try anything once!

When the business came to an end I made the decision to apply to study HNC Contemporary Art Practice at UHI Inverness. I have developed mixed media skills producing abstract watercolour and hand embroidered artworks and explored machine stitching as a drawing medium. I made jewellery for my final pieces for this years graded unit exploring the rich cultural heritage of Scotland past and the people’s pride in this. I love not being tied down by any medium and am very process driven in my work. I am always experimenting. Going forward I plan to continue studying to degree level.
